Bernard Ghanem

B. 1963, Keserwan

Bernard Ghanem is a lifelong student and observer of life. From an early age, he demonstrated a remarkable talent for transforming ordinary materials and scraps into captivating objects of play. His ability to create art out of unconventional materials captured the attention and fascination of those around him.

In 1992, Ghanem created his first significant work of art, a sculpture titled "The Dancer," marking the beginning of his artistic journey. This was followed by subsequent creations, including "The Escape" and many others. His talent and dedication to his craft led to his recognition as an associate artist of the Sursock Museum Salon d'Automne.

Ghanem has showcased his artwork through various exhibitions in Lebanon and internationally, including prestigious venues such as Hutton-in-the-Forest historic house in Cumbria, Kingston Lacy historic house in Dorset, and the Fire & Iron Gallery in Leatherhead. In May 2008, three of his sculptures were added to the permanent collection of the gallery. Additionally, his works have been featured in the Surrey Sculptural Trail, an annual event held at the Royal Horticultural Society's garden at Wisley in Surrey, UK.

One of Ghanem's notable achievements includes his sculpture "Progress," which became part of the permanent collection of Lord and Lady Hutton's art collection. Furthermore, he became a valued member of Cumbria's Sculptors and Artists Society, further solidifying his place within the artistic community.

About his Work

Ghanem's sculptures are crafted from iron and possess a striking black color. However, it is rare to encounter iron with such a smooth and satin-like texture or black hues so soft and velvety. The adjective "elegant" aptly describes his work, with warm black surfaces that showcase a meticulous finish. While his artistic language leans towards abstraction, it is not entirely detached from recognizable forms. Ghanem emphasizes that each sculpture originates from a specific idea or human gesture, lending a deeper meaning to his creations.

The creative process begins with a cold, rigid sheet of metal, which the sculptor skillfully shapes into undulating or angular forms. Through intuitive decision-making, he molds the metal by hand or with the use of fire, giving rise to curvaceous expressions that ultimately receive a black coat of paint.

Ghanem's work exemplifies the essence of open form. With a keen eye for the aesthetic impact of every bend in the metal and each spatial component within the piece, he transforms ordinary materials into images of exceptional refinement. Some of his sculptures exude liveliness and movement, evoking a sense of joy and freedom. Others, characterized by slower spatial exploration, possess a tranquil and contemplative quality. Overall, his sculptures successfully convey powerful emotions that resonate deeply with viewers.
