our permanent exhibition

MACAM – the Modern And Contemporary Art Museum in Alita/Byblos is Lebanon's first contemporary art museum dedicated to preserving, documenting, and exhibiting art in the country. An independent non-profit society has transformed a factory complex into a dynamic museum with a wide outreach. As a research and teaching institution, it boasts a rich library and archive of art in Lebanon and a unique art education program for school children. Its one-level, four-thousand-square-meter space welcomes special-needs children, the blind, and the visually impaired, applying the motto: MACAM is a museum for everyone. Visitors enjoy its periodic and permanent exhibitions, Panorama of Sculpture in Lebanon, which presents a century of sculpting in Lebanon.

MACAM celebrated the 70th Universal Declaration of Human Rights Anniversary by designating 2019 as the Human Rights Year. The Wall of Contemplation project was launched as part of this initiative, focusing on Human Rights. The project received funding from the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon and invited Lebanese and international artists to submit proposals for murals representing the rights outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

A professional jury of seven members including art critics and activists carefully selected twelve artists who will be responsible for bringing their proposed murals to life. Each mural will have a size of 5 x 4 meters, creating a significant visual impact.
