Saadallah Lebbos

B. 1947, Tyre

Saadallah Lebbos nurtured his passion for knowledge and the arts from an early age. After completing high school, he embarked on a journey to Ivory Coast, where he worked as a foreman. Upon returning to Lebanon, he pursued studies in architectural drawing. Following this, Lebbos assumed the responsibility of his father's tile factory, and in 1977, he established his own tile and marble factory in Amchit.

During a pivotal moment, Lebbos wielded a hammer and chisel, discovering a profound fascination with these tools. Driven by an insatiable curiosity, he sought out a friend who was a primitive sculptor and began to learn the craft. He later had the opportunity to apprentice under Zaven Hadichian for a two-year period while immersing himself in literature on sculpture.

Since 1982, Lebbos has participated in over ten solo exhibitions and fifty group exhibitions, both within Lebanon and around the world. Notably, he made significant contributions to the Salon d'Automne of the Sursock Museum for six consecutive years. In 1987, Lebbos was chosen to represent Lebanon in the eleventh Biennale d'Art Contemporain de Monaco, an event held under the patronage of Prince Rainier.

About his Work

Saadallah Lebbos is primarily a sculptor who specializes in working with stone and marble, using these materials to give form to his artistic vision. His pieces often incorporate organic forms that evoke geometric shapes, providing a thought-provoking commentary on the cyclical nature of life and death, as well as the stark realities of the modern world. These shapes are distinct and not commonly observed in the Arab world, showcasing Lebbos' drive to create captivating art.

His artwork serves a dual purpose of celebration and exploration, inviting viewers to dive into their inner selves and realms. Simultaneously, it explores the profound connection between humanity and the vast universe. Through symbolic representations, Lebbos examines the interconnectedness and individuality of human beings. His art seeks to capture the depths of the mind, exploring the ongoing internal dialogues that shape our existence and influence our responses. Ultimately, his creations aspire to capture the boundless expanse of the cosmos and the essence of the soul.
